Welcome!

I am a Registered Provisional Psychologist under the supervision of Dr. Gina Ko, Registered Psychologist, at Ko Psychology. I have a year of counselling experience in the school system and am now branching into private practice. There are seasons in life where gleaning perspective and insight are necessary to navigate diverse circumstances, pivot in the midst of challenges or find a safe space to process. I invite you to pause and acknowledge that you are worthy to take this time, on your journey towards holistic wellness and envisioning new possibilities. Call or email for a free consultation: jocelyn@selahviecounselling.com. I look forward to meeting you! ##### My Story I was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. My parents came to Canada from India as hardworking immigrant professionals. Their commitment to providing a better life and future for their children, extended family and parents back in India was engrained and what kept them striving for excellence and new opportunities. I grew up as a third culture kid embracing the tension between my ethnic cultural identity and that of my country of orgin. Throughout the years navigating through expectations and developing my own sense of cultural fusion in identity enabled me to embrace the beauty found in my uniqueness and the many diverse ethnicities that our country showcases so well. These experiences coupled with my upbringing in faith provided context for my desire to attend to cultural awareness, sensitivity and competency in my practice.

My passionate involvement in my faith and cultural community ignited a love for working with children. I pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Education and worked for over 25 years in the private and public education sectors both locally and internationally. The bulk of my experience was with the Calgary Board of Education. Through this rich and diverse career especially overseas, I began to recognize the importance of supporting children, youth and families in the pursuit of holistic health. Working in both marginalized communities and affluent ones, one common ground existed, the longing to find the gold that exists in each person, family and community that makes people unique, powerful and created to engage in life with every high and low experience from a position of strength. This is something that came naturally in teaching where connecting in genuine and personalized ways with people on their life journey was a profound delight. I knew that there was a stirring within me to pursue a second career in counselling.

My commitment to teaching, supporting my spouse, a project manager in the oil and gas industry, and my three children, delayed this pursuit. I was in my later 40’s when I finally decided to begin my Master of Counselling degree while teaching and mothering. I taught through the Covid 19 pandemic and continued working through my degree gleaning a tangible understanding of the complex dynamics in our education systems for both staff and students. My own journey supporting neurodiverse family members and students has allowed me the privilege of embracing the unique giftings and challenges that come with neurodiversity, navigating through systems that cater to neurotypical learners and empowering people to advocate for their customized needs to be acknowledged. I had the honour of being employed as a school counsellor for the Palliser School Division providing wrap-around support for students. Working with their teachers, administrators and families, I collaborated with students as they worked towards enhancing greater holistic health.

As a Provisional Psychologist, I consider it a great honour to work under the mentorship of Dr. Gina Ko, a pioneer in anti-oppressive practice and an inspiration in the profession. Outside of counselling, I’ve been involved in volunteer opportunities leading groups that support adults and children experiencing divorce and single parenting, codependency, serving with my family in feeding the homeless and supporting anti-human trafficking initiatives.

In my spare time, I love being with my family. Supporting my children 18, 16 and 12 in their academic and extra-curricular pursuits is a priority. Living honestly and working through issues as they arise is a necessity. I enjoy walking, journalling, reading, singing, travelling, skiing, listening to music, swimming and quality time with friends as well. Nature revives and replenishes me, my faith grounds me and breathes life into my being. These self-care practices create space for reflection, authentic living and self-compassion.

My Approach

I offer a collaborative, creative, compassionate, strengths-based therapeutic approach. I am honoured to work with all of my clients in understanding their core values, identifying goals and building a genuine therapeutic connection. I work from a biopsychosocial lens considering biological, psychological and social factors that may be impacting the current narrative of the client. Narrative therapy, attachment theory, basic and parent/child attachment EMDR are the primary theoretical stances I draw from through a culturally sensitive lens with an openness to incorporating creative expression as per client choice. With counselling support we will work together to illuminate a path through your own unique narrative and challenges.

My name is Pooja, and I am a Registered Provisional Psychologist. I believe everyone has strengths, support, and a desire for growth. Such support needs to encompass unconditional positive regard and understanding. It is important to meet clients where they are and strive towards their goals with compassion, while gently challenging beliefs. I believe all clients have a unique perspective of their situation rooted in their identity, values, and culture.

I have a Master of Science in Counselling Psychology and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) with a major in Psychology, both from the University of Calgary. My approach to counseling is client-centred, strengths-based, evidence-based, and culturally responsive to meet client needs. I draw from Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT), Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), and Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT).

Previously, I have worked with disadvantaged populations who struggled with systematic barriers impacting their employment and housing, which then affected their mental health and relationships with friends and family. I also worked closely with clients, supporting them in their grief journey. These experiences taught me that the challenges individuals face are contextualized to their sociocultural positionality, identity, and relationship dynamics.

Let’s discover your strength and resilience together to get closer to your goals. I recognize client outcomes are associated with a good fit between the therapist and client. Therefore, I offer a 15-minute, no-cost phone consultation so we can get to know each other before a session. I offer therapy in English and Punjabi.
